Aggies rise in polls after sweep of texas
Unlike college football polls, which tend to be very similar, baseball polls can be all over the place. That’s certainly the case with Texas A&M this week, with the Aggies receiving varying results after their two victories over Texas.
Baseball America has the Aggies ranked ninth in the nation, while D1 Baseball has them ranked 10th. Perfect Game was less impressed with A&M’s dismissal of the then-No. 2 Longhorns, only moving the Aggies up to 14th.
Grahovac continues torrid streak
Since the start of the Missouri series three weeks ago, first baseman Gavin Grahovac has played at an All-American level. He’s gone 16 for 43 (.372) at the plate, with seven home runs and 20 RBI. Eleven of those 16 hits were for extra bases, with two doubles and two triples to go with those seven homers.
Among regular starters, Grahovac is now second in average (.356), OPS (1.143) and RBI (46), trailing only Caden Sorrell in all three categories. He’s also second on the team in total extra base hits with 23.
Grahovac has consistently hit for average this season, but the power numbers have spiked since late March. He’s back to providing the punch at the top of the order that few teams can replicate.
Bear is out of his hibernation
As recently as March 21, catcher Bear Harrison’s batting average was .204. Starting the next day, however, Harrison has gone 12 for 31 (.387) with three home runs and 12 RBI. He’s also walked 12 times during that period, including at least one walk in each of the last five games. For the season, Harrison has walked 28 times and has been hit 14 more.
With the emergence of true freshman Nico Partida and Grahovac and Sorrell hitting for both average and power, the pressure’s largely off Harrison to be a slugger the team is built around. He’s continued to draw walks, but now he’s been more relaxed at the plate and the results have followed. His average is up to .275 and his OPS is up to 1.108.
Good hitting pummeled good pitching
After scoring 20 runs in two games against Texas (keeping right in line with their season average of 9.91 per game), the Aggies are now third nationally in scoring, third in slugging, 16th in batting average (.317), second in on base percentage and sixth in home runs per game. In spite of Texas’ supposedly vaunted pitching, all of those totals are up from the week before.
Here’s a look at how things went for the Aggie offense from April 6 to yesterday, April 12:
| Category | As of April 6 | As of Sunday |
| Batting average | 0.322 (15th nationally) | 0.317 (16th) |
| Home runs per game | 2.13/game (5th) | 2.06 (6th) |
| Runs | 309 (5th) | 337 (7th) |
| Slugging percentage | .593 (5th) | .589 (3rd) |
| Walks | 208 (4th) | 228 (4th) |
| Hits | 322 (38th) | 348 (64th) |
The run and hits total dropped because they didn’t have three games played this past weekend. Otherwise, they went through the Texas series and kept things steady.
Now, here’s what happened to Texas pitching:
| Category | As of April 6 | As of Sunday |
| ERA | 3.09 (4th) | 3.46 (6th) |
| Hits allowed per game | 6.81 (4th) | 6.95 (4th) |
| Strikeout to walk ratio | 3.51 (3rd) | 3.19 (9th) |
| Strikeouts per 9 innings | 11.6 (9th) | 11.2 (10th) |
| WHIP | 1.13 (3rd) | 1.16 (5th) |
Everything got worse. Having a team ERA jump by nearly four-tenths of a point in two games is of particular note. The stats show that the Aggies did a great job working counts, drawing walks and minimizing the damage done when they got behind in the count. A&M showed a great approach at the plate this past weekend; Texas did not show much of their high-quality staff in return.
Clear signs of a turnaround
Pitching struggles aside, the Aggies have come a long way from last year’s frustrations. Last year, the Aggies were swept by Vanderbilt, Missouri and Texas. This year, the Aggies swept Mizzou and Texas and took two of three from Vandy. The Aggies had 30 wins in 2025; if A&M’s hot streak continues through Tuesday’s matchup with Houston and a three game set in Baton Rouge this weekend, the Aggies could have 31 with more than a month left in the regular season.
