Aggie Hoops adds one of Texas’ best for ’27

Texas A&M added one of the best players in Texas for the recruiting class of 2027 Thursday afternoon with the commitment of Friendswood point guard Chase Richardson.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound guard averaged 18.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 2.7 steals per game in 2025. That was enough to make him a top 100 prospect on both On3/Rivals and 247 Sports. He is the fourth-highest ranked player in the state of Texas for 2027, and among the top 25 point guards nationally for that class.

Richardson had a final five of Notre Dame, Nebraska, Purdue and Virginia. He also had offers from Maryland, Miami, Ole Miss, TCU and UCF, among others. Richardson had been considered a Nebraska lean until his visit last weekend to College Station, which appeared to have swayed him.

Analysis of A&M’s Newest commit

Richardson has an explosive first step that allows him to get in the lane and to the basket. He’s got some serious hops as well, dunking easily with one hand. I’m throughly impressed with his ability to finish at the basket with both hands, and how he keeps the ball protected with his body as he approaches the rim. That’s serious talent.

Richardson gets his shots off quickly and looks comfortable shooting coming off of a screen. He really seems to like shooting straight on and doesn’t need any extra movement to go from the dribble to shooting. His range looks be more than sufficient.

Bucky Ball operates with a pressure defense, heavy on attempting to force mistakes. Richardson is very good at anticipating passes and jumping the lane to grab the ball. One thing we don’t really see in his highlights are examples of his passing abilities, but if he averages about 6 assists per game, he must be pretty good at it.

In the uncertain times that college basketball finds itself in, it’s hard to say whether Richardson will play as a freshman or not. But it looks like he probably wouldn’t be overwhelmed if he finds himself on the court.
