Saturday Draft Wrap

Texas A&M tied a program record for players taken in the NFL draft with three more selections Saturday.

The Aggies made Coach Mike Elko into a savant, fulfilling the prediction he made last spring that the team would have double-digit players drafted. They had 10 players taken, tying a program record. But that was done 50 years ago, when the draft was 17 rounds.

Cornerback Will Lee was the first Aggie taken, by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round (129th overall). Lee put together two very good seasons at A&M, earning second team All-SEC honors after the 2024 season. In 2025, Lee made 50 tackles, with two tackles for loss and a sack. He also led the team in passes broken up with eight after breaking up 10 the year before.

Lee will join fellow Aggies Nic Scourton, Bobby Brown III and Demani Richardson on the Panthers’ defense.

The New England Patriots took offensive tackle Dametrious Crownover in the sixth round (196th overall). Crownover started all 13 games this season and allowed just two sacks in 428 dropbacks. Crownover will not be rushed in New England, as he will be behind 35-year-old veteran Morgan Moses, entering his 12th professional season with his fifth team.

The final Aggie taken in the draft was the last of the four eligible Maroon Goons taken, with guard Ar’maj Reed-Adams being taken in the seventh round (241st overall) by the Buffalo Bills. Reed-Adams was a second-team All-American selection by the Associated Press and was a team leader, playing nearly 700 snaps in spite of dealing with numerous injuries.

Quick Free Agent signings

An unpleasant surprise from the draft process was linebacker Taurean York and running back Le’Veon Moss going unselected. Both players, as well as several of their teammates, were snapped up quickly as undrafted free agents.

York, a two-year team captain, led the Aggies in tackles with 72, including seven tackles for loss and two sacks. He led A&M in tackles each of the three seasons he was in Aggieland. His lack of size overtook his ability to make tackles and knack for making plays, but the Denver Broncos moved fast to sign him.

Moss’ problem was not production or size, but injuries. Moss was only tackled for loss twice in his last two seasons and carried for 404 yards on 77 carries (5.02 YPC) and six touchdowns. Moss averaged more than 5 yards a carry in each of the last two seasons, but both years were cut short due to serious injuries — a torn ACL in 2024 and an ankle injury last year.

Moss was signed by the Miami Dolphins, where he will team up with his former Aggie backfield-mate De’von Achane, a Pro Bowl selection last year.

Fellow running back EJ Smith did not sign with his dad’s Dallas Cowboys, but signed a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Smith was one of the most pleasant surprises of the 2025 season, picking up a lot of the workload after Moss went down in the Florida game. He carried the ball 44 times for 205 yards (4.7 YPC) and 5 touchdowns, including one against Texas.

The Minnesota Vikings signed a pair of Aggies as undrafted free agents. Linebacker Scooby Williams was snapped up quickly, with the Vikings seemly interested in his superior athleticism. Williams was off to an outstanding start to 2025 before suffering an injury while making an interception against Notre Dame that short-circuited his season. He ended up with 19 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss, along with a sack and an interception.

Minnesota also signed nickel Tyreek Chappell, who finished his fifth season at A&M in 2025. Chappell, who missed all but two games in 2024, tallied 34 tackles, three tackles for loss and four passes broken up.
