Grahovac’s tear starting to grab national attention

First baseman Gavin Grahovac has been on a tear over the past month. That’s actually an understatement — few players in baseball at any level have been on a heater like the Texas A&M junior has.

On March 27, he was hitting .341, which was just fine — but only had hit two home runs. He doubled that total the next day, then hit two more the day after that. Over the past month, Grahovac has 30 hits in 74 at bats for an average of .405. Twelve of those hits were home runs, as doubles earlier in the season have started to go over the fence. He has knocked in 32 runs during that timespan.

Grahovac is now hitting .370 for the season with 14 homers and 58 RBIs, just one behind team leader Caden Sorrell. His OPS is up to 1.182, with Sorrell just barely ahead at 1.185. He’s also second on the team in on base percentage at .455.

It’s also probably not coincidental that the Aggies have gone 13-3 since March 27.

Harrison having a unique season

Catcher Bear Harrison is hitting .282, up from .204 on March 21. That kind of gets overlooked with the rampages Grahovac and Jorian Wilson have been on. That he also leads the team in on base percentage at .500. He’s on base exactly one half of the time.

Harrison has 29 hits on the season. Nineteen of them have gone for extra bases — 11 doubles and eight homers. He’s also walked 32 times, tied for second-most on the team. To boot, he’s been hit 15 times, tied for second in the conference.

Sims, Lyons picking up the W’s

The Aggies currently have 33 wins. Nearly half of them belong to starter Aiden Sims and reliever Gavin Lyons.

Sims and Lyons have combined for a 16-0 record so far this season, and they’ve become two of the most important pieces to the team’s pitching staff.

Lyons had a 5.20 ERA on April 7 after getting lit up for 3 runs in an 1 1/3 innings at Texas State. Since then, he’s picked up four wins — one against Texas, two in three days against LSU and one Sunday against Florida. His ERA has dropped to 4.35. He’s become the piggyback long reliever for A&M’s starters when the Aggies have the lead.

Sims has been the ace since early in the season and has eight wins in 11 starts. He’s struck out 64 batters in 60 innings while giving up just 43 hits, with a batting average against of .197.

The Aggies are going to have to go a long way with a short staff. Right now, Sims, Lyons and closer Clayton Freshcorn are the three pitchers on that staff consistently performing at a high level.
