Player of the week (One game vs. Tarleton State, three vs. Auburn)
Centerfielder Caden Sorrell. He was 7-17 (.411) with three home runs after having hit one home run in his previous seven games. He only had three RBI — driving himself home each time — a testament to the difficulty the Aggies had driving in runs against Auburn.
Pitcher of the week
RHP Weston Moss. In what was easily his best performance of the season and likely his career, Moss held Auburn to a run on one hit over 6 1/3 innings Sunday. He was perfect until giving up a double with one out in the top of the seventh and struck out six.
Partida’s injury looms over stretch run
Freshman third baseman Nico Partida went down awkwardly into a split early in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. He immediately left the game with what appeared to be a groin injury. A&M has yet to announce exactly what his injury is, but he was ruled out for Sunday’s game.
If Partida’s injury is long term, that will be a heavy blow. He’s hitting .317 with 12 home runs, 41 RBI and an OPS of exactly 1.000. He started each of the first 44 games and had played solid defense at the hot corner.
While Partida is out, Gavin Grahovac will likely stay at third base after playing there for the remainder of Saturday’s second game and Sunday. That would keep Blake Binderup (.321, 6 HR, 23 RBI) in the lineup at first base.
Hacopian shows off his toughness (Again)
Second baseman Chris Hacopian did not play in the field this weekend after having a big collision with right fielder Jorian Wilson. But he served as the designated hitter and drove in all four runs in Sunday’s 4-3 win.
Hacopian has been battered and bruised during his lone season at A&M, but has endured. No instance of that was more obvious than against LSU, when he took a fastball to the face, left the game bleeding heavily and, eventually, had a root canal. He was in the lineup the next day.
His results have been less than he may have liked so far — .286, 6 HR, 27 RBI — but he’s retained his first round grade and earned the respect of his new teammates.
