AggieHuddle Mailbag

It’s Thursday Night, and you KNow what that means — it’s time for Mail call!

Q: If you could hand pick a Kyle renovation, what do you want to see? (RetiredAirForce)

A: Now, I say this with the caveat that I haven’t sat inside Kyle Field itself since George W. Bush was president. Since then, I’ve been either in the press box or on the field. So my choice would be more elevators on the student side so we can get up or down faster. Outside of that, maybe some walls in the open corners to keep more noise in. But that’s about it.

Q: The ghost of Fay Vincent appeared. True or false? (BRag)

A: I’m guessing that you’re talking about Braden Sorsby being gently pushed into the NFL Supplemental Draft. I think that Texas Tech did a cost-benefit analysis and realized they could really get pulverized if they decided to take on the rest of college football on their own.

Q: If we don’t get Henderson, is LB a weakpoint, or do we have enough to carry us through to the next cycle. (R23)

A: Well, they got him, so that issue is taken care of. But like I said in the article I put out this afternoon, they’ve got really good depth in terms of sheer numbers going into next year — and they may add one more linebacker before they’re done.

Q: Any idea what a very good hitter of pitcher make in NIL? (TheThreadEnder)

A: Really good ones may make 7 digits, I guess. Before the decimal.

Q: The Dobson recruiting seems odd to me. I understand you may not be able to elaborate at the moment, but is there an interesting story there?

If there is I would like to hear it when you can tell it. (Longneck)

A: I haven’t heard any stories about it, and I’m curious about it too.

Q: So, tt did the honorable thing and told Sorsby to hit the road. I don’t like giving recognition to the big whatever, but apparently, somebody found some smart lawyers and made them cry uncle. I know it involved money, but what specifically do you think was on the hook that got them to bite?

A: I think the Big 12’s lawsuit wasn’t necessarily a hook, but a hammer. It was airtight and put Tech in a potentially perilous situation.

Q: A) When does the baseball portal close?

A: The 30th.

B) You mentioned earlier your thoughts on what we need in transfers. How are we doing on that? (Bear_PI)

A: Let’s see.

Catcher: Got him (Nate Savoie, formerly of Clemson; .329, 16 homers, 52 RBI in 2026)

First baseman: Got him (Lane Arroyos, formerly of Western Kentucky; .361, 7 HR, 50 RBI in 2026)

Second baseman: Got him (Jack Bell, formerly of TCU and A&M before that; .303, 6 HR, 27 RBI in 2026)

They need an outfielder and a DH. Terrence Kiel II can take over in center and Jorian Wilson’s in right, but they need a left fielder with some pop. In fact, they need several outfielders, because they’re thin out there.

On the bump, they’ve got a start but are by no means finished.

Starter: RHP Johnny Nuanez (6-2, 2.58 ERA at Wichita State); need at least one more.

Reliever: RHP Jace Evangelista (4-1, 6.17 ERA and 5 saves at UNLV); RHP Wade Cooper (7-3, 4.72 ERA and 5 saves at Texas State). They’re going to probably need two more relievers at a minimum.

Mike Elko and Jackie Sherrill are very different men, but their plans have succeeded.

Q: What is your pic for Meredith and Henderson?

A: I am very confident Henderson will pick A&M. As for Meredith, I think he’s going to Texas.

After every commitment, I keep thinking we are at the end but the staff seems to get someone we were not expecting. Is this staff done a good job to information from leaking out?

They don’t leak like a sieve, unlike some past staffs. They’ll talk to us, but won’t give up the farm.

Do you think the lack of facilities was one of the main reasons RC was losing in recruiting?

That was a major reason, yes. Mack Brown got Texas to undertake the first major refurbishment and their facilities were light years ahead of A&M’s. And the Aggies sat around and did nothing until it was way too late.

I have been an Aggie since December of 1984, and I see similarities between Sherrill and Elko. Do you think Elko can build us to Sherrill’s success?

In terms of personalities, the two couldn’t be more different. His approach to building a winner is also probably different. But can Elko equal Jackie’s success? We’ll see, but he has them pointed in the right direction.

How is Elko getting the players to buy in on being developed and not have to play right away? (LufkinAg)

I don’t think he necessarily is. He’s telling them what he’s said to other players: the best players play. It’s not like freshmen didn’t play last year; look at Noah Mikhail, Marco Jones, Landon Rink and Jamarion Morrow. If they’re ready to play, they’ll get on the field.

Q: I don’t know much about college baseball (or anything else); but, it seems like we have a disproportionate number of injuries.

Is this: My imagination, bad karma, par for the course, the ice cream curse, something else, bad juju from the Snook graveyard?

I’d appreciate your expert opinion. Thank you, Sir! (Froppe)

A: I think that it’s just how things played out. They really didn’t have more injuries than other SEC teams, and there’s not much you can do against collisions in the outfield and fastballs to the face.

Q: Are there parties that are similar to West Coast parties? If not, why? (Hippin)

A: Ain’t no party like a Gulf Coast party cuz a Gulf Coast party don’t stop.

Or something.

Q: How has journalism become so empty and vapid? Everyone swallows what the internet shoots out and spits it back as if it were their own. (R23)

A: Beats thinking. A lot of these guys have story quotas they have to hit or paid per view. So that’s one reason you get stuff like that.

Q: Who will A&M target for a track coach? (Gruvin1)

A: Not sure. I think they’re going to look at both internal and external options, and I’d be surprised if they make a move quickly. Replacing a legend is not an easy thing.

Q: After we get Henderson, Meredith, Simien, Williams-Callis, & McFarland, are we done or do we keep the pedal to the metal? (OGHogtide78)

A: I don’t think they’ll get all those guys, but they won’t stop with them either.

Q: Sorsby’s pro workout is July 10th at Southlake Carroll’s indoor facility. I live within a mile. It’s said all 32 NFL teams will have representation. Is/was he that good?

A: It’s a quarterback-driven league, so teams would be foolish if they didn’t at least take a look.

We’ve had a kicker, a punter, and a TE that we didn’t hear that much about before they committed. Are there other recruits out there beside the big 4-5 that we’re targeting and if so, any insight?

Look out for 4-star linebacker Mikahi Allen out of New Jersey and 4-star DT Raiden Cook, currently committed to Houston.

Any hints about who Bucky might be considering for the last slots?

He’s got one slot left, and I think he’s going to wait on using it. He didn’t use his final scholarship last year until well into the summer.

You get your choice of an old muscle car. What’s your choosing?

Early 70’s Dodge Charger. Maybe a ’71.

I was gonna send Shannon Terry a thank you note. Anything you want me to add? (Tsip despiser)

Nah, I’m good.

Q: What do you think are some of the key contributors for this year’s recruiting successes? What have you seen that has changed from past years? (Spar2cus)

A: First, A&M has a great recruiting staff. Elko has a vision that he’s willing to share and it resonates. The Aggies are coming off a CFP appearance and look like they’re on the upswing. And NIL doesn’t hurt either.
