New sponsor!
Special thanks to Doug Brown and Crystal Creek Partners for their faith in me and the product by stepping up to sponsor one of the centerpiece articles on the site. They’re good people and have rental properties in College Station. I’ll have a new update on what they’ve got going soon.
If anyone else is interested in advertising, let me know. We can do a lot more on the Huddle than that other place. And it’ll work for you.
It’s time to get serious
Two weeks from today, SEC Media Days will be underway. I’m going to start the position previews for the 2026 Aggies this week and will preview their opponents during media days, same as always. But in a time when it’s tough to come up with content, I’d like your insight into things. What are some things you’d like to see or discuss that can fill up the front page? After all, I’m here to keep you guys informed and entertained.
Gut feeling on position groups before really getting into the deep dive
From best to… well, you know.
- Defensive tackle. I’m just really impressed by the depth A&M has assembled here. Staying here depends on the play of DJ Hicks, but I think the other DJ — Sanders — could break through this year.
- Wide receiver. The Aggies may not have a KC Concepcion this year — but who knows, they might — but they may have the deepest receiver room in program history. They’ve got a lot of guys who can play at the SEC level. If Jerome Myles or one of the freshmen really shows out, this could be a special group.
- Safety. The trio of Marcus Ratcliffe, Dalton Brooks and Tawfiq Byard could be among the nation’s best. There’s just a dropoff after them.
- Linebacker. This all rests on James Coney getting the defense and Daymion Sanford being healthy. But Noah Mikhail looks like he’s becoming a beast.
- Defensive end. The foursome of CJ Searcy, Anto Saka, Marco Jones and Ryan Henderson looks quite solid. If they can get something out of one more player — Bryce Perry-Wright, I’m looking at you — then they’ve got all the pieces.
- Cornerback/Nickel. This actually may be low, because Dezz Ricks and Rickey Gibson could be one of the best duos in the conference. Julio Humphrey has plenty of experience for CB3. The question really is, who’s going to fill out the two deep? Jordan Shaw and Bryce Anderson are fine at nickel.
- Quarterback. Marcel Reed is established, but there’s very little experience behind him. Brady Hart looks legit, though.
- Running back. Rueben Owens could be outstanding, but he’s got to bounce off hits better. The backup job is up for grabs.
- Tight end. They have numbers, but only Houston Thomas and Richie Anderson have had any success.
- Offensive line. Too many questions. Yeah, they replaced their four losses with SEC starters, but how good are they really? And that’s the biggest question about this entire season.
Sizing up the arms race
The Aggies have been very active in the transfer portal, but there’s still work to be done. The Aggies have to get more help in the outfield, but they can certainly use more arms. I will note that we’ve got some players in limbo (Shane Sdao, Weston Moss, Clayton Freshcorn), but this is what it looks like five days before the draft starts:
SP: RHP Aiden Sims (8-1, 3.84 ERA in 2026)
SP: RHP Johnny Nuanez (6-2, 2.57 ERA at Wichita State)
SP: RHP Gavin Lyons (9-0, 5.06 ERA)
RP: LHP Cooper Powell (0-0, 2.19 ERA)
RP: LHP Cole Hubert (0-0, 9.31 ERA)
RP: LHP Hunter Vincent (0-0, 6.35 ERA)
RP: LHP Caden McCoy (did not pitch in 2026)
RP: LHP David Ramirez (redshirted in 2026)
RP: RHP Cooper Fulbright (redshirted in 2026)
RP: RHP Jase Evangelista (4-1, 6.17 ERA, 5 saves at UNLV)
RP: RHP Wade Cooper (7-3, 4.73 ERA at Texas State)
RP: RHP Caleb Kimble (0-1, 3.97 ERA at Houston)
RP: LHP Logan Prisco (1-0, 3.45 ERA at South Carolina)
RP: LHP Trent Collier (1-1, 3.80 ERA at Oklahoma)
Signees:
LHP Chandler Hart
RHP Trent Vilade
RHP Cayden King
LHP Josh Livingston
LHP Evan Mihaly
RHP Drew Milner
LHP Elijah Williams
With seven freshmen, three redshirts, a pair of pitchers who struggled as freshmen and five transfers, new pitching coach Barry Enright will have a lot to work on. I think they need at least one more starter, because I’m iffy on Lyons. Maybe McCoy can be an answer.
