How did Texas A&M fare in a draft that saw eight Aggies get selected? We take a look here.
Who got Drafted:
2B Chris Hacopian (11th pick overall, Nationals)
CF Caden Sorrell (62nd pick, Cubs)
3B/1B Gavin Grahovac (81st pick, Angels)
LHP Shane Sdao (120th pick, Mets)
C Bear Harrison (160th pick, Yankees)
RHP Weston Moss (316th pick, Nationals)
OF Jake Duer (536th pick, Diamondbacks)
RHP Clayton Freshcorn (564th pick, Cardinals)
RHP Jace Evangelista (424th pick, Red Sox)
That’s a first rounder, two second rounders, a fourth rounder, a fifth rounder, an 11th rounder and an 19th rounder. Evangelista, from UNLV, was taken in the 14th round.
Signees drafted:
SS Trey Ebel (21st pick, Brewers): Gone.
SS Connor Comeau (54th pick, Rangers): Bye.
That’s it. They lost two of their top signees but nobody else. Outfield Ryan Harwood, who will arrive with a big left-handed bat, wasn’t drafted. Third baseman CJ Sampson pulled himself out of the draft Sunday morning, so he’ll make it to campus too.
Will everyone sign?
Duer is out of eligibility, so he’ll sign. As for the rest of the draftees, I think they will all sign — until we get to Freshcorn. Evangelista is a question mark, but I do think Moss will go.
The big question…
What will Freshcorn do?
I’m surprised that he lasted until the 19th round. If the Cardinals don’t pay significantly over slot, I can see him returning next season. He can do better than the 564th pick. If he returns, he immediately moves back into the closer role and the bullpen, which was a disaster this year, suddenly looks like a strength. He has a decision to make, and it’s not a no-brainer like some of the others.

Comment
Overall, the Aggies did pretty well navigating this draft. All of the players taken in the first 10 rounds were expected to leave, so their replacements were already lined up. Freshcorn is the big story now because, if he returns, the Aggies line up a proven closer with power stuff behind a bullpen that can bring it. One of the freshmen may get a look as a starter, because I’m still not sold on that being the group.
The lineup is just flat nasty. From two to eight, you’re dealing with hitters who can burn you if you make a mistake. The projected leadoff hitter creates havoc when on base and the nine hole hitter has plenty of pop. If Harwood is as advertised, look out. That will make this group almost obscene.
The Aggies got lucky with the draft. Extremely lucky. But they were due for a break.
