Camp storylines

How aggressive will the safeties be? In the latter half of the season, Brooks began to play closer to the line of scrimmage and was extremely effective. Byard played a lot near the line of scrimmage at Colorado and did this spring. Ratcliffe said he expects the safeties to be in the box a lot this season. When you have quality tacklers with size, it makes sense.

Who will be the backups? Byard will essentially be a third starter along with Brooks and Ratcliffe. That leaves one more spot, and Davis will likely have that job. Even though he had rough points last season, he is by far the most experienced remaining safety on the roster.

Just how good can this group be? The big three are all very accomplished players. Ratcliffe is a preseason candidate for the Nagurski Award and Brooks is severely underrated. Byard was probably the best player on a bad Colorado defense last year. Davis and Johnson are very athletic, and Wilson and Collins both flashed in the spring. They’ve got veteran depth and athletic youngsters. It’s a potentially strong group.
