Camp Storylines
How good is this group, nickels included? Coach Mike Elko says he thinks this is the best secondary he’s had at A&M, which is pretty telling. He has experienced nickels in Shaw and Anderson, who should split time; he has a strong veteran top three at corner with Ricks, Gibson and Humphrey. Gibson was one of the SEC’s best cornerbacks in 2024 before an upper body injury cost him all of 2025. If he’s back at full strength, he and Ricks make a good starting duo. Humphrey could back up both, essentially giving them three starters.
Who’s the fourth corner? In the spring, it was redshirt freshman Adonyss Currie and he likely goes into camp with that role. He’s the only other player on the roster at corner with any playing time and the coaching staff liked him a lot when he was signed last year. He probably has the edge.
Will any of the freshmen play? In the eyes of many, that question is, “Will Brandon Arrington play?” The likely answer to that is “only if they’re really ready.” They have enough depth at corner to take their time with Arrington and Vic Singleton; the same goes for Camren Hamiel at corner. If any of them get serious playing time, it’ll be because they earned it.
