Pregame Primer

Here’s everything you need before No. 10 Texas A&M (1-0) takes on Arizona State (1-0) Saturday morning:

Weather will likely be a factor

The temperature at Kyle Field at kickoff will be 90 degrees with a heat index of over 100. During the course of the game, the temperature will increase to 95 degrees and a heat index pushing 110. And that’s before you factor in the pads, helmets and increased heat on the field.

Five Sun Devils to know

QB Cutter Boley. Boley, who played at Kentucky last year, threw for 367 yards and four touchdowns in his Arizona State debut. Boley has a tremendous arm and can make big throws, but he also turned over the ball a lot — he threw 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions for the Wildcats last year.

WR Omarion Miller. Miller, a second team All-Big 12 selection last year at Colorado, has already established himself as Boley’s favorite target. He caught eight passes for 102 yards in the season opener and brings a physical presence to the receiver corps — but he also has the ability to get deep.

DT C.J. Fite. The grizzled veteran of the defensive line, Fite has started 28 straight games and 33 total in his career. He had 29 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss last year and, at 310 pounds, he’s the man in the middle the interior of the offensive line will have to move.

LB Owen Long. ASU’s version of Ray Coney, a tackling machine who transferred in from a non-power conference program. Long actually had more total tackles than Coney did last year with 151 to Coney’s 147 (Coney had more solo tackles). He’ll try to make life difficult for Rueben Owens and the Aggie running backs.

CB Rodney Bimage. The strength of the Arizona State defense are their corners, and Bimage is the best cover corner they have. He’s going to be expected to cover one of the Aggie receivers (likely Isaiah Horton or Ashton Bethel-Roman) and take them away.

Five keys to the game

Get out in front early. A&M scored on its first possession of the season and then went flat for much of the first half last weekend. Today, they need to go out and operate effectively from the jump (again) and stay at a high level. Arizona State may be pretty quick in terms of offensive tempo, but will be out of their comfort zone if they do down 10-0.

Add even more heat. In this case, the heat is the pass rush. The Sun Devils torched Morgan State 70-7 last weekend, but still gave up a pair of sacks to an overmatched defense (one of which became a turnover). The Aggies played a pretty vanilla defense last week, but they’ll likely turn up the pressure today to make life tough for Cutter Boley.

Spread the ball out. Bimage and Ashton Stamps are two tall and very good cover corners. But the Aggies have more than two good receivers. Marcel Reed needs to be willing to get the ball to all four (five, if you want to add Aaron Gregory), his tight ends and running backs in order to get ASU frustrated.

Win the running game. I mean this on both sides of the ball. Arizona State has a defensive front with legit size, but Morgan State still ran for more than 100 yards at 4.1 yards a carry. The Aggies need to lean on them. Then, on the other side of the ball, if the running game stalls out, then the RPO game becomes a whole lot less effective.

Win the TOP battle decisively. The Aggies won time of possession by a ridiculous amount last weekend, holding onto the ball for nearly 43 minutes. That almost surely won’t happen today, but grinding down ASU’s defensive front — especially in this heat — will be a massive difference maker. If A&M keeps the Sun Devils out there for extended periods, they’ll probably crack.
