New Soccer coach sees red — literally
The Aggie soccer team fell to 4-8 on the season Friday night with a 2-1 loss to Georgia in Athens, but the score wasn’t the interesting part. The ejection of first-year coach Bobby Shuttleworth was.
Shortly after Georgia tied the score at 1 in the 65th minute, Shuttleworth received a yellow card for berating the officials. The Bulldogs scored the go-ahead goal 41 seconds later, which made Shuttleworth even more irate. A little over 10 minutes after receiving his first card, Shuttleworth was carded a second time and literally given the gate, as he had to lean on the fence on the perimeter for the remaining 22-plus minutes of the game.
Volleyball runs winning streak to five with dominant weekend
The Aggie volleyball team has now won five straight matches and is 3-0 in SEC play after sweeping both Alabama and Mississippi State at Reed Arena over the weekend.
The Crimson Tide were the first victims, falling 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-19) before 5,917 fans. The Aggies tallied 42 kills and 34 assists in the match, with Megan Fitch leading the team with 14 kills and Kirra Musgrave contributing 27 of the assists.
Things weren’t much better for Mississippi State, with the Aggies taking the three sets 25-22, 25-20 and 28-26. A&M racked up 46 kills and 39 assists against the Bulldogs, with Kyndal Stowers putting up 21 kills and five aces. Musgrove added another 35 assists in the win.
The Aggies are now 10-5 on the season and 8-1 at Reed Arena. Their next match will be Wednesday in Norman against Oklahoma.
Aggies in the NFL
The contingent of Aggies in the NFL took another huge hit Saturday, with Green Bay Packers linebacker Edgerrin Cooper suffering an apparent Achilles injury in a 17-14 win over Tampa Bay. Before the injury, Cooper was having his best game as a pro, with 9 tackles, a sack and an interception. If the injury is confirmed to be a torn Achilles, his season is over.
Rib injury or not, San Francisco wide receiver Mike Evans was on the field for the 49ers Sunday and was a difference maker. Evans had a team-high 5 catches for 76 yards in a 24-14 win over Denver.
Two Aggies contributed to Jacksonville’s 22-17 win over Cincinnati. Tight end Nate Boerkircher had a 15-yard catch, while safety Antonio Johnson added 5 tackles, including a tackle for loss.
Baltimore defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike had 4 tackles in a 24-18 win over Tennessee.
