Rogers Discusses Rise To Starting Job

Texas A&M Sophomore offensive lineman Lamont Rogers Enjoys playing football.

Texas A&M football player #79 in camouflaged uniform engaged in a play against Arkansas player #88 during a college football game.
Sophomore Lamont Rogers has surged into the starting lineup over the past couple of weeks.

When asked what he likes about the sport he’s now playing at the highest collegiate level, Rogers gave a response that any offensive line coach would want to hear.

“I find football very fun, and every time I get on the field, you know, I say it just excites me … I can go hit somebody and not get in trouble for it, you know what I’m saying?” he explained.

A massive human being at 6-foot-7 and 340 pounds, Rogers definitely makes an impact when he hits someone. He did a lot of hitting against Arkansas, as the Aggies ran 49 times for 236 yards. Rogers said that the offensive line has developed a belief that they’re going to control the line of scrimmage to allow the running game to be successful.

“We just have a mindset just to bully people,” he said. ” We want to just dominate the run and and you know say I said in previous Coach (Mike) Elko put a challenge on us and we as an all-line unit we want to beat the challenge. I said, ‘We want to just conquer the challenge.’”

Rogers already faced one challenge this season, starting the year as a backup at right tackle behind Wilkin Formby. But, as his play picked up, the coaches decided to move Formby to right guard and put Rogers in at right tackle, creating a massive right side of the offensive line.

“I’ve been playing physical, just really physical,” he said. “Just having a different mindset in practice, just wanting to dominate everybody. They’ve seen that in me and say I’m the the guy for the job.”

Being a successful offensive lineman in the SEC, however, requires more than just a strong punch and good footwork. Rogers said he realized he would have to more work off the field in order to get into the starting lineup and stay there.

“The extra film, the film I’ve been watching (has made a difference). Just going in, asking questions more, just knowing the knowing the game plan, knowing the execution, just knowing my assignment,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of growth. I feel like just the the games I’ve started, in the game, like the football, just became so much simpler. Things are not as fast. Everything is just my pace.”

Last year, Rogers played in four games as the backup left tackle to Trey Zuhn and Reuben Fatheree. This year, he’s not only moved to right tackle, but got some work at guard as well. So where is he most comfortable?

“I’m comfortable playing all positions, I’m the type of guy (that) if the team needs something, I’ll be that guy,” he said.
