What A&M wants to do Offensively

Something positive. Last week was the absolute nadir for the Aggie offense and the natives are getting restless. The Citadel’s defense isn’t good — they’re giving up 4.6 yards a carry and a completion percentage of two-thirds of passes thrown. This is what a team in need of a slumpbuster is looking for. The Aggies need to go out and establish the running game immediately, get Reed some confidence, work on the downfield passing game and hopefully give the backups most of the second half.

What the Aggies want to do defensively

Stuff the run. The Bulldogs are a very run-heavy operation and run a lot of option looks. Quarterback Quentin Hayes is the primary runner, so he and backup Nick Billoups (who also plays a lot) need to be contained. This will be a good test of eye discipline and staying home for a team that has been frequently sloppy so far this year.’

If and when the Aggies get the Bulldogs into a passing situation, they need to get a strong pass rush. Not just to slow down The Citadel, but to show themselves they can do it. If the Aggies can apply pressure, then they’ve got a good shot at forcing turnovers.

What the Citadel Wants to do Offensively

Run that option. The Bulldogs like top operate out of the shotgun in almost an RPO style, with a back on each side of the quarterback. There’s just not much P in their RPO. Hayes can make big plays with his feet and they’d like to see more of that. Garcia has been a tough, physical runner and he’s going against a defense that has struggled against players matching his description. The Bulldogs are going to need to be tricky with their run game, control the clock and pop some play action passes to stick around.

What the Citadel wants to do defensively

Take away A&M’s running game and make Reed beat them. That may be easier said than done, but it’s a reasonable goal considering how poorly the Aggie offense has been operated this year. Brown is their best defender, making a lot of big plays blitzing from his linebacker slot. There’s no reason to think he won’t do the same today. If the Aggies get pre-occupied with him, maybe the defensive line can make some plays against Reed in the passing game. We know Reed has struggled all season, so they may throw some different looks at him to see how he responds. They’ll need to slow the running game and force turnovers to remain within shouting distance.
