Basketball drops exhibition at SMU
The Texas A&M basketball team let a late lead slip away Sunday in a 94-88 loss to SMU at Moody Coliseum in Dallas.
Touted transfer guard PJ Haggerty showed his scoring prowess in the loss, scoring 28 points while shooting 10 of 15 from the field. Fellow transfer Jordan Pope added 15 points while forward Mackenzie Mgbako scored 12 points and added eight rebounds.
The Aggies had a lead as big as 67-57 with 9:04 remaining in the game, but let it dwindle away. SMU made nine straight free throws in the final 26 seconds to salt the game away.
The results were a mixed bag for the new-look Aggie squad, as it was extremely effective at the free throw line, making 80% (32 of 40) of their attempts but shot only 6-for-26 from 3-point range (23%). A&M forced 22 SMU turnovers, but committed 34 fouls compared to the Mustangs’ 24.
Volleyball sweeps weekend, takes down no.4 Kentucky in finals rematch
The No. 19 Texas A&M volleyball team took two matches on the road over the weekend, beating Georgia 3-1 Friday and sweeping No. 4 Kentucky 3-0 in Lexington Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies (13-8, 6-3 SEC) starting the trip against a Bulldogs team that had not lost at home in conference play. A&M took the first set 25-23, then dropped the second 25-18 before rebounding to take the final two sets 25-21 and 25-23.
The Wildcats were supposed to be the tougher opponent of the two, as they returned much of their national champion runner-up squad from last year, but the Aggies put together their best match of the season in a three-set sweep. A&M dispatched Kentucky 25-20, 25-23 and 25-21, the first home sweep the Wildcats have suffered in more than two years.
Kyndal Stowers paced the Aggies with 16 kills while Natalie Ring added another 12. Margot Manning led the team with 36 assists.
