COLLEGE STATION — The Texas A&M basketball team had its scoring touch Friday night, shooting 55% from the field in a 104-67 rout of Northern Kentucky.

Guard Jordan Pope led the Aggies (2-0) with 18 points as six players scored in double digits while overwhelming the Norse (2-1). A&M started the game on an 11-0 run and never trailed. In 80 minutes of basketball so far this season, Texas A&M has yet to face a deficit.
Pope scored six of the first 11 points, with forwards Jalen Shelley (13 points, 6 rebounds) and Cade Phillips (12 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks) adding the remaining five. The Aggies pushed their lead to 14-2 when guard Rylan Griffen, who regained his eligibility after sitting out A&M’s season-opening win over Alabama State, drained a 3-pointer. Griffen would end up with eight points in 16 minutes of playing time Friday night.
The Norse cut the Aggies’ lead to nine at 29-20 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half, but an 8-0 run over less than a minute which included 3’s from Pope and guard PJ Haggerty (10 points, 3 assists) and a jumper from forward Mackenzie Mgbako (14 points, team high 7 rebounds and 4 assists) pushed the lead back to 17 with 9:35 left in the first stanza.
A&M essentially put the game away with a 13-0 run that lasted nearly five minutes later in the first half, the majority of which came right at the rim. Forward Zach Clemence (8 points, 4 rebounds) started the scoring spree with 7:07 remaining in the half with a layup, followed by a jumper by guard Neiko Mundey (4 points) — his first points scored as an Aggie. That was followed by dunks by forward Josh Irving (4 points) and guard Tyshawn Archie (12 points in 15 minutes on 5 of 6 shooting) a 3-point play from Pope and a lay-in by Phillips to stretch a 39-27 lead to 50-27 with 2:26 to go before halftime.
The Aggies led 52-32 at the half, but never took their foot off the gas. After Phillips started off the second half with a close-in jumper, A&M’s next four makes from the field were all 3-pointers, keeping the Aggie lead at 20 points or more.
The Norse closed the margin to as little as 17 with 9:51 left, but two more big runs would blow the doors off the overmatched visitors. Archie scored five of the 12 points in a run that lasted nearly three minutes that pushed the lead to 85-56 with 6:12 left, then a 14-0 run highlighted by 3’s from Pope, Mgbako and Griffen put the Aggies up 40 with 1:29 remaining in the game.
The Aggies made 41 of 75 shot attempts, including 12 of 29 3-pointers (41%). The score could have been even more lopsided, but A&M only made 10 of 17 free throw attempts (57%). Defensively, the Aggies forced 23 turnovers after forcing 25 against Alabama State and held Northern Kentucky to a shooting percentage of 34.5% for the game.
